A functional approach to achieve Speech and Occupational Therapy rehabilitation goals.

What is Breakfast Club?
Breakfast club at Uplands Rehabilitation Centre provides a meaningful environment where residents can engage in tasks that are relevant to them.
Engaging in familiar every day activities of daily living:
- Allows the brain to make new neural pathways and improve both cognitively and functionally
- Provides our residents with communication opportunities to practise their strategies so they can express their needs, make choices, participate in conversations, further building on their social skills.
Breakfast club allows our residents to practise tasks in a safe manner working on their gross/fine motor skills. It provides them with a suitable ‘challenge’ for rehabilitation, working towards their goals.
After our residents finish their breakfast they are provided with a newspaper, allowing them to sharing their opinions on subject matters, working on their language, communication and reading skills.
Breakfast club does not only working on SLT/OT impairment based goals but provides a social environment with social support, allowing our residents to regain their confidence and independence to re-integrate back into the community.
When does it run?
Our Breakfast Club runs every Wednesdays 8.00-9.30am by our Speech and Language Therapist (Tina Kad) and Occupational Therapist (Anand Samuel).
This is an opportunity for our residents to get together, having breakfast and socialise in the meantime.
Why do our residents attend?
- Our residents have the chance to meet other residents and make friends, having conversations in a casual setting.
- They feel part of a community Helps them work on their communication skills, increasing their confidence
- Regaining independence through making choices, prepping and serving themselves breakfast (buffet style)
- Improving functional skills: hand over hand support, compensatory strategies/techniques with competing activities of daily living (buttering a toast, prepping cereal, making a cup of tea or wiping the table).
- Reduces the feeling of loneliness and isolation- break out from a monotonous routine.
